For the Mamas

For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.
Psalms 147:13

The other day, we had one of those days with one of our kids...you know, one of those days, when you feel like all you do is yell and discipline over and over again. Well, this past weekend was just not a very good weekend for our little family. With the added pressure of not having our own place and things moving slower than we expected, let's just say we had a rough couple of days.

On one of our bad days, this verse stood out to me as I was reading...."He hath blessed thy children within thee." To me, it was such a comfort that God has blessed my children. I know that I need to do my part to teach and train, share the Gospel with them, but God has blessed them. Have you ever felt relieved after reading a verse? Maybe an encouraging article? Maybe listening to a sermon, song?

Sometimes as mamas we need encouragement! Not to be self-centered here, but a lot of times, we tend to be the one that does the encouraging not the one receiving the encouragement. Ladies, I hope and pray that when you come to my blog you can be lifted up at least a little. We surely need it! Especially to be able to be the kind of helpmeet we should be and the right kind of mama. Will you join me in being an encouragement?

Following Joy...

Joy is such a simple word, yet so many people can not seem to grasp it. Even Christians...

Like I said earlier this month, my word for this year is JOY.

I want my life to be so filled with real joy. Not a fake happiness that is totally based on my surrounding, feelings, and experiences. Real joy is totally based on Jesus. The same place that our strength comes from. The same place that our peace comes from. Jesus!
This year, I want to follow joy...Follow Jesus!

One thing that I have learned so far this year is that joy comes in being thankful to Jesus for what He has given me. I have been reading One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. I have to say that I do not agree with everything she writes (ex. Bible versions), but what she has to say about joy and thanksgiving is so true! I need that...I am so ungrateful. yet I don't even realize all the blessing that are right in front of me.

This year, I'm taking a simple journal and just jotting them down when I see a blessing. The thing I love about her book is that she came to realize that the everyday life, the common house work, day in and day out is where the blessings lie. Not in extraordinary miracles...yes, the Lord does and has done great things for us, but just being able to live, breath, is enough. It is enough to know that I'm forgiven!

Another thing I've realized so far this month is joy comes when I realize who i am in Christ. I am nothing, yes, but in Christ, I am a daughter of the Most High God! Amazing! That He would take me, with all my faults, my failures, my sin, and make me a child of His! Yes, I could shout for joy! I want to raise my hands in praise to my King...I'm His girl! God is so good!

These are the things I want my children to see and know from me. If they never learn anything else from their mama, I want them to know what real joy looks like. I want to be a happy mama. A Joy-Full mama.

So, will you join me to follow joy this year? Do you know any good books about joy? Thankfulness?

We are also learning the Sermon on the Mount starting with Matthew 5. So far we have learned the first 2 verses (it is two verses a week until the end of the year), and today is the start of verses 3 and 4. We would love for you to join us!

Happy Thursday! Happy Joy Hunting!

Just a Few Words...

I have been seriously thinking about taking a blogging vacation...need a break. But before I do, I'd like to just tell you something that has been on my heart.

Ladies, the devil is very real.

For those of us in the Independent Baptist realm, we have seen in the last week or so how the devil will take a great work and destroy it in nothing flat. Not only take one man's ministry and kill it, but a wife, a family, a home, and a church...a testimony of Christianity!

Yes, Ladies, the devil is very very real. It is time we realize how real he is.

Ladies, not only is the devil very real, but we  do have a very very very real God. A God who loves us more than anything.

Some times in the midst of conflict, war, and trials, we forget that we have an enemy that is out to destroy anything God has blessed us with--our families, our homes, our testimony to others, our faith.

Some times in the midst of conflict, war, and trials, we forget that we have a God who is greater!

We have a calling from God as wives and mothers. Let us remember that we are not just married. We are not just mamas, but we have a ministry. The ministry of the home. We have been placed in this place for a specific purpose. Don't faint. Don't fail. Ask God for grace and wisdom and strength for a new day!

Happy Monday!

With this ring I thee wed...

I think it is about time somebody stood up and gave three cheers for marriage! The world is doing a lot of talking these days about the pleasures of being a "swinging single." In fact, a whole cult is building up in our country around this idea. There are now "single bars," sindles apartment buildings, singles clubs, and the advertising world is cashin in by promoting cosmetics, sports gear, clothes, vacations, and restaurants designed especially for this group.

I am well aware of the fact that God did not intend every person to marry. I know dozens of women who live busy, fruitful lives without a family. Some, I think, have even chosen singelness as a way of life for the cause of Christ. Perhaps they had opportunities to marry but felt their opportunities for service for the Lord would be increased alone. others, no doubt, would have married had the Lord led them to the right man, but have found a life of contentment and joy outside of marriage.

God bless all of these dear women!

What concerns me is the trend in our time to avoid commitments and obligations that come with marriage and the rearing of a family. I am alarmed at the casual attitude even many Christians have toward the common practice of young people living together without benefit of the marriage ceremony. No matter what the Women's Movement may say, a woman who tries to avoid the responsibilities and involvement of a home and family simple because she does not want to be tied down and committed to a life of service for others, is cheating herself.

We forget that marriage is an institution created by God--the first institution, in fact--and it is of more significance than any other human institution, including government and the church. God knew what men and women would need to be most fulfilled, to function most efficiently, to be happiest and sagest in a world endangered and contaminated by sin. Marriage enable tow people to build a relationship--physical, spiritual and emotional--so unique and intimate and holy that God could make it a beautiful picture of Jesus Christ's relationship to the church.

In spite of the decay of our contemporary moral condition, the institution of marriage is still a precious gift of God to mankind. How important it is that every child of God do everything possible to preserve a standard of righteousness for his own marriage, to determine that nothing will damage the sanctity and quality of the home!

And how important it is that we teach our children the beauty and holiness of marriage, not only by example but by careful teaching from the Word of God. How sad it is that we provide a college education, we teach them to drive a car, to handle money , to develop other skills, but we neglect this most important training of all--how to have the right kind of marriage.

Thank God for marriage! May we seek for a renewal of God's blessing on the Christian home.

"God setteth the solitary in families..." Psalm 68:6
"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" Genesis 2:24
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Confessions of a Happy Housewife Wednesday...#4

Hey y'all! Another Wednesday...my, oh, my!!

Anyway, this Wednesday, I want to share my heart.

I have really been struggling lately with my spiritual life, my attitude, and well, just life in general.

BUT! I want to change some things in my life. You know, the Lord is the one that does the changing, but He is not going to take any steps until we realize that we can not do it. I believe that is what I have been doing! Trying to overcome my sin on my own, trying to live a victorious Christian life without His help. And boy, have I failed completely and entirely!

Jonathan has been teaching on choices in our junior class on Wednesday night. We do have to make the choice. God doesn't stand over us, making us yield to Him. It must be a constant choice on our part. When we decide, He then will give us the strength to withstand.

It's a hard thing to learn at times. Now, for me, I am having to break down strongholds...thought patterns and habits that I have built up over the years. To be truthful, I have no one to blame but myself. I am my problem.

So...what I am going to do...I am going to with the Lord's help start building some new habits like:

  • Making sure that I read my Bible every morning instead of just a verse or two.
  • Pray. Not just for myself and my problems, but for my family and others.
  • Be thankful. The Bible, clearly states that we are to give thanks in everything. Kind of like Ann Voskamp's book, One Thousand Gifts, we need to be thankful day in and day out for everything little thing.
  • Get my priorities straight! That means putting things ahead of certain things...like my household duties before computer time, etc.
These are just a few things that I am choosing to do in my life starting tomorrow morning. Will you join me? Sometimes, it is good to have someone to answer to. So, after a few weeks, I'm going to repost about this and let you know how everything is doing. I know satan will try to throw everything at me to stop me from growing in the Lord, but will you pray for me, dear blog friends? For my homes sake and the Lord, I need to do this.

Have a great Wednesday!!!

God's Protection...

Did you ever have one of those days when your past is brought back up into your life?

Oh my goodness! Over the past few days, mine has been thrown back up at me! No, I didn't lose my purity before marriage, but I made the mistake of choosing the companionship of another man before I met Jonathan.

Why am I telling this?

For you, young ladies, that are not married. For you, married ladies, that satan wants to remind you of your past however horrible it has been.

Young ladies, please, please, please, trust the authority that God places in your life. No matter how old you are. The Lord has placed those people in your life for your protection. Be careful! The Lord will protect, but if you go against that protection, it is not His fault if you go against His will. He is waiting to forgive when we do...

To those who have failed, when you are reminded of the past...stop and praise the Lord! I believe that the Lord has used this in my life to remind me...where He brought me from and what He has given me! Oh, to have is best! It is so wonderful!!!! God is truly good! So, today, I'm rejoicing in God's protection!

How God Loves Me...

Some times, our minds get off the fact that we are loved.

Some times, our minds get off the fact that we are loved unconditionally.

Some times, our minds get off the fact that we are shown that love.

Here is how I've seen God's love lately:

~ My Sweetheart gave me these beautiful deep pink roses. I have one left that doesn't seem to want to leave our home. It sits on our kitchen table.

~ Jeremiah started clapping...all by himself...so sweet!

~ My Sweetheart took me on a surprise date on evening for a Diet Coke and a cookie from Chick-fil-a!

~ I found 2 khaki skirts at Goodwill this week!

~ I found a blue teacup at Goodwill to give to Mama.

~ I've been blessed with such a wonderful family. Immediate and outside family.

~ I'm deserve to be dead...I'm alive!

~ I deserve hell, but I have a home in Heaven!

~ I have an old fleshly nature, but I have been given a new nature! Though they war, my Jesus is still my Helper and my God!

~ I'm on the winning side!

What has God done to show you He loves you?

Jesus Weeps...

We all know the shortest verse of the Bible..."Jesus wept." John 11:35.

Two words, but they have really made me think today.

You know what?

Jesus still weeps. He weeps every time we sin. He weeps when He sees a lost soul reject Him once more. He weeps when we weep. He weeps when we are troubled, despairing, and hopeless.

Yes, Jesus weeps for us just like he wept over the children of Israel.

Are you causing your Saviour to weep today with some sin in your life? I'm afraid that I have many times today. But~ you know what?

Psalms 86:15  But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
Praise the Lord! He is these things! He never changes!

Today, I'm thankful that my Jesus weeps over me.

Godly Encouragement for Women...

I love to find encouraging sites and blogs, and I would love to share one with you that has been a real encouragement to me lately. Mrs. Fink has a blog over at Journal for Women. Here is an excerpt from a recent post, "Beautifully Used":

...how what is it that can do to fill ourselves up with the presence of God so that the desire to genuinely love will be what naturally flows out of our heart for others?
Spend time singing along with spiritual music
.  It is the singing of the psalms, hymns and spiritual songs that fills our hearts and minds with the joy of the Lord and the hopeful perspective of His Word.
Spend time saying thank you to God and others for everything and just about anything
.  Being grateful is the polishing rag that keeps our souls from becoming critical and self-focused.
Spend time being willing to spend your time doing what is good for others.
Being willing to submit ourselves to others is the tool of life that keeps us humble.  And it is only through the lens of humility that we are really ever interested in investing anything good into the lives of others.
Is that it?  Yes, the Bible tells us that’s exactly how it happens.  We sing and say thanks and submit ourselves for the good cause of others and the Bible teaches us that something spiritually wonderful begins to happen when we do this ~ the presence of God begins to fill our heart and mind and soul, when it comes time for our thoughts and feelings to spill over into the lives of others, it’s the love of God that is within us that spills over.
Why?  Because the Bible teaches us in Luke 6:45, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good ;. . . for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”Whatever is flowing in us is going to be the very thing that flows out of us into the lives of the people that we are interacting with.  It’s just the way life is.  We can only give what we have and we only have what we have taken the time to put in, and if we want to become women who are going to be beautifully used in the lives of those that are around us, we must decide to do what we can to make sure that the presence of God is what we are being filled with within.
Wasn't that great? Why not stop in and glean something that will help you today?

He's Been Faithful...Renewing a right vision of what God has done...

I am going to confess something to y'all today...something that I struggle with from time to time... Doubts... yes, that is my weakness...I'm like a druggy or a drunk...if I allow myself to take one ''sip'' of a doubtful thought, I have to rebreak the habit that I acquired a while back.

When the doubts assail me, it is almost like I'm in a deep dark tunnel with no light at the end...I can't see the light of truth that I know is there...somewhere...everything seems so bleak...I can't remember anything that I know to be true or right! It's truly a horrible feeling...a feeling of hopelessness! I have been so blessed to have godly councel that I can turn to...sometimes we need that. The Lord places people in our lives to help us to grow and lean on Him...its during those times of doubt, helplessness, hopelessness, fear that I must and you must renew our vision onto the Lord and what He has done for us. I'm writing this today not to say that I have arrived, on the contrary, I am struggling today and I need to renew my outlook to Him and what He has done for me!

1. He has been faithful...I struggled and struggled with my salvation for so long, but I know He is faithful...I have settled that! I am persuaded of that! I know that He holds my salvation in the center of His hands, and NO MAN can pluck it out! Praise the Lord!

2. He convicts me of my sin...yes, that is something that the Lord has done for me...Just this past weekend, I have had a wrong heart toward someone, and the Lord showed me how wrong I was...then, my love is not the right kind of Love according to the Bible (that's another post for another day)...He convicted me of my sin...I'm so thankful He showed me my sin so that I could be saved!

3. He forgives me...oh, the debt that I owe Him for that...I will gladly give Him my life! He loves me so much!

4. He answers prayer! Boy, does He! I have a loving husband as a result of answered prayer. The doilies that sit around my house are a result of answered prayers. :) My car sold for $500 (it was a 1988 station wagon) so that I could go to CA to Bible college. I was given that car by answer to a prayer! I have Jeremiah as a result of answer prayer! I wasn't sure if I would know when to go up to the hospital to have Jeremiah...I didn't have to worry about it! The doctor put me in!

Here are just four things that I know the Lord has done for me! This is what I am going to focus on today! What are you focusing on?

Words for the Heart Monday

This Too Shall Pass

If I can endure for this minute

Whatever is happening to me,

No matter how heavy my heart is

Or how dark the moment may be-

If I can remain calm and quiet

With all the world crashing about me,

Secure in the knowledge God loves me

When everyone else seems to doubt me-

If I can but keep on believing

What I know in my heart to be true,

That darkness will fade with the morning

And that this will pass away, too-

Then nothing in life can defeat me

For as long as this knowledge remains

I can suffer whatever is happening

For I know God will break all of the chains

That are binding me tight in the darkness

And trying to fill me with fear-

For there is no night without dawning

And I know that my morning is near.

...Helen Steiner Rice

Jennifer, a blog friend, shared this on her blog, and I thought it would be perfect for this week because it surely spoke to my heart. Sometimes, we may go through a trial or a time of temptation, and we may wonder in our hearts, when will I get through this, but let us remember everytime, that morning must come, spring must come...another thing, is this the first time you have been through a trial or temptation? Remember how the Lord saw you through last time! God is surely still on the throne! Happy Monday!

Making the Good People Nice

I read this during my devotional this morning, and I thought I'd share it with ya'll! It reminded me of the Patch the Pirate song "The Joy of Jesus":

1 Peter 1:3-8
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

Riding a bus one day, I overheard this statement: "Christians may not have made the world any better, but they surely have made it duller."
We could shrug this criticism as sheer cynicism. Maybe, however, we can profit by questioning what occasions such a comment.
Then there's the prayer of a five year old, "O God, please make the bad people good and the good people nice."
Something is behind the insightful recognition by a child that "good" and "nice" should go together.
What is "nice" to a five year old? Generally, it's joy and happiness, the good-to-be-with feeling one gives the child. "My teacher's nice" is generally accompanied by shining eyes and a warm smile. "Nice" is a good thing, a pleasant thing to be.
Why is good not always pleasant?
David the psalmist knew the two go together. He wrote, "How good and pleasant..." (Psalm 133:1). Both good and pleasant! Not like medicine, which, it is said, the more effective it is, the more unpleasant to the taste. I recall an evil tasting concoction my mother used to dispense (on principle, I think, rather than prescription). The name of it was Henry's Solution, and as a youngster, one of my goals was to get even with this "Henry"--maybe make him drink a quart of his own medicine.
Have you thought that this is how some people regard us and our Christianity? They question, "Does it have to be so unpalatable?"
It may be that they have been disillusioned, that sensing or knowing that Christ promises joy and happiness, they have nevertheless had as models Christians who project an image of gloom. Such persons can't know for themselves all the benefits of being a Christian until they have first tasted and found that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Meanwhile they need good samples, and we who need to demonstrate that our faith in Christ is working for us; our inner Christian joy must show on the outside.
Christian joy doesn't come in a spray can. We can't turn it on and off like an aerosol. It's the deep spring of living water that Jesus promised wold bubble up in the hearts of those who believe, and it is both good and pleasant. It need never be grim!

An Encouraging Post...

Hey, everyone, I just thought that I would share an encouranging post that I read tonight. One that my sister Rebekah just did a few moments, "He's Already In Your Tomorrow." Isn't it a wonderful thought that He is already in your tomorrow and in my tomorrow. She talked about people discouraging you from the dreams that you have, and sometimes, it seems when you have a desire to do something for the Lord that the devil will send discouragement your way to dishearten you from stepping out with faith. Anyway, what I'm trying to say, that even though we may have fear of what may happen tomorrow, or can't see too far ahead, we know Who is in our tomorrow. Jonathan reminded me of a song recently, "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow."

I don't know about tomorrow,
I just live from day to day.
I don't borrow from it's sunshine,
For it's skies may turn to gray.
I don't worry o'er the future,
For I know what Jesus said,
And today I'll walk beside Him,
For He knows what is ahead.

Refrain
Many things about tomorrow,
I don't seem to understand;
But I know Who holds tomorrow,
And I know Who holds my hand.

Ev'ry step is getting brighter,
As the golden stairs I climb;
Ev'ry burden's getting lighter;
Ev'ry cloud is silver lined.
There the sun is always shining,
There no tear will dim the eyes,
At the ending of the rainbow,
Where the mountains touch the sky.

I don't know about tomorrow,
It may bring me poverty;
But the One Who feeds the sparrow,
Is the One Who stands by me.
And the path that be my portion,
May be through the flame or flood,
But His presence goes before me,
And I'm covered with His blood.

Sometimes We Wait...

This used to be one of my favorite songs that West Coast did. It is so true...so sit back...turn the music off at the bottom of the page...and just listen. The message speaks for itself. There are times that we have to wait, but the wait it always worth it...getting God's best, God's answer...letting Him lead and guide in our lives. Yes, sometimes we wait...on the Lord!
