Family Traditions...

This year, I am so excited to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with our little family! I have been thinking about some new traditions that we can start with our Jeremiah...I know...I know...he will not know what is going on, but if we start them now, we will, Lord willing, continue them!

  • This year, we continued that Thanksgiving week tradition that Jonathan and his family have been doing the last couple years...we went to the WVU game here in town!
  • One we started last year was, we get a REAL Christmas tree! Not one of those artificial ones, but the ones that smell like Christmas! So on Saturday, that's what we are going to do! We are planning on making it a tradition to go get breakfast, pick out a tree, and come home and decorate it!
  • I was also reading in a parenting magazine about buying a ornament (like something specific...like snowflakes) for your child every year so that one day they can take it into their home for their tree!
  • I would love to take one night during the Christmas season and ride to look at the lights...maybe pack a picnic supper or some snacks and hot chocolate to take along!
  • Last year, we made photo Christmas cards, and we did that this year, too...can you believe it? I already have a few addressed!
  • This year, we are sending some Christmas cards to our missionaries...I'd really like to continue that, too, and maybe as Jeremiah gets older, he can make some cards to send them!
  • Read the Christmas story with Jeremiah!
These are some traditions we had growing up:
  • We always spent Thanksgiving at Granny's with Uncle Don, Aunt Amy, Donnie, Sarah, and Molly
  • We would go for a walk after our big turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.
  • We would draw names...and draw again because someone somehow always would get their name!
  • Thanksgiving evening, we put up Granny's tree. A job that I have to admit is not my favorite, but I miss it this year.
  • On Friday, we would always go get our tree...most of the time at the School for the Deaf, and then, we would decorate it and watch White Christmas.
  • I would go help Granny make fudge and seafoam candy...something I miss now...
  • We cousins would all go shopping right before Christmas and of course grab something to eat!
  • The last couple years, we sisters would make a gingerbread house together! That was fun!
  • Christmas Eve party with ALL the family! Oh my goodness, all that good food!
  • Daddy would read the Christmas story (Luke 2) on Christmas day before we would open our presents!
  • Then, after presents, we would get dressed, wearing something we got for Christmas, and head to Granny's for turkey, sometimes ham, dinner!
So, do you have any ideas for traditions? What are your favorite family traditions?
